A Return to the Tottenham Way
“To Dare Is To Do” is the club’s motto but Mourinho’s style of play is the exact opposite.
I was reminded of this by a quote from club legend Danny Blanchflower, “The great fallacy is that the game is first and last about winning. It is nothing of the kind. The game is about glory, it is about doing things in style and with a flourish, about going out and beating the other lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom.”
Club legend Danny Blanchflower is known to be a big part of the identity of the club. He was part of the Club’s double winning side in 1960-1961 where he actually predicted they would win the double before the season. PC Central Press/Getty Images
Winning is important for every club, but what sets the great Tottenham Hotspur aside from the rest is the ability to do it in style. Or at least it was, until we reached the point where had the style but not the ability to win. Or earlier this season, the ability to win but we were unable to do it in style. And now, worst of all we lack the ability to win, and we no longer have the style to comfort us in loss.
I agree that a break from our idealism may have been needed in order for the club to win trophies but it’s going against everything we stand for. To me it seems to be the equivalent of selling our soul to achieve trophies. Is it worth it? That’s your opinion and to a certain extent maybe it’s just what the club needs in order to reestablish ourselves among the great European powerhouses. But as of now it has been a failed experiment. There is still time to turn it around and to do so Mourinho will need until at least the end of the season.
But after the special one’s reign reaches its end, a return to the DNA of the club is needed. A manager who represents Spurs and Spurs history.
Spurs greats such as Danny Blanchflower, Bill Nicholson, Glen Hoddle, and Jimmy Greaves would be disappointed in the club right now. We’ve strayed too far from what makes Tottenham Hotspur Tottenham Hotspur.
Spurs most successful manager, Bill Nicholson said, “Anyone coming to Spurs… must be dedicated to the club. He must never be satisfied with his last performance and he must hate losing.” But that does not sound like Spurs anymore. After we lose our players can be seen laughing with international teammates from the other team.
A large part of this could be the fact that fans are not allowed in stadiums right now so Mourinho and the players can get away with a more than they normally could without supporters breathing down their neck. Either way, the squad needs to win trophies, or we will need a rebuild this summer offloading the players who don’t represent the fabric of the club.
