Why the Rams won the Matthew Stafford Trade
The Rams have traded two future first-round picks(2022 and 2023), a third-round pick, and QB Jared Goff to the Detroit Lions, in exchange for Mathew Stafford. The former 1st overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft is now on a contending team and can show off how good he is with the Rams. The Lions on the other hand get a starting quality QB and multiple draft picks to rebuild their franchise. Looking at the details the Rams won this trade and he’s why.
Getting Rid of Jared Goff’s Contract

The former 1st overall pick of the 2016 NFL draft, Jared Goff has been underwhelming during the 2020 NFL Season. This year his numbers across the board have gone down(pass yards, touchdowns, and passing touchdowns). Goff signed a 4 year, $134,000,000 contract with the Los Angeles Rams in 2019. This past season was the end of his 5th-year option on his rookie contract and now his average earrings for the next 4 years will be $33,500,000. To put that into perspective the MVP favorite Aaron Rodgers makes around the same amount of money per year on his current contract. It's fair to say that he is not worth that kind of money. Getting rid of that contract is a huge win as instead of paying Goff that money they will pay Stafford a similar amount but Stafford can give you the production.

In Detroit, Matt Stafford was not given the best offensive weapons after Calvin Johnson retired in 2014. He’s had multiple head coaches in his time with the Lions and has still put up numbers and set multiple franchise records. He is currently ranked 16th in both all-time passing yards and all-time passing touchdowns. The most impressive stat is that he is 4th all-time in passing yards per game. The Rams needed consistent QB play from Jared Goff and he struggled to get going. Stafford has proved that he is consistent and now he has weapons such as Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods, and Cam Akers. It's positive that he will make this offense better give the Rams more consistent Quarterback play.
The only downside for the Rams is that they still won’t have a first-round pick for the next couple of years. They haven't had a 1st round pick since they drafted Goff back in 2016 and they gave up more last year in the deal to bring in Jalen Ramsey from the Jacksonville Jaguars. This team is a playoff contender and for the next couple of years, their picks will be around the 23rd overall. Aside from their picks, Matt Stafford is 32 and there will be a question if he can keep up the production he’s had in his career so far.
The Rams made a move that will greatly help out their window to win the Lombardi Trophy. Getting rid of paying Goff like a superstar Quarterback will be one of the biggest accomplishments of the offseason. The only question now is if the Rams will be able to put up good performances during the regular season in the toughest division in football.
