USWNT Release Roster for Tokyo Olympics
USWNT Head Coach Vlatko Andonovski has released his selections for the Tokyo Olympics.
Seeking their fifth Olympic gold medal, the USWNT will head to Tokyo, Japan in July.
Starting in goal will likely be Alyssa Naeher. Naeher has been the starting goalkeeper for the national team since since 2016. Initially in the shadow of former USWNT goalkeeper Hope Solo, Naeher has emerged as one of the best goalkeepers in the women’s game. With a critical penalty kick save against England in the 2019 Women’s World Cup, Naeher has stepped up. Can she continue to show up big when it matters most?
Andonovski’s second selection for goalkeeper is Adrianna (AD) Franch. Franch has been consistent for her club team, Portland Thorns FC in the NWSL, but has limited international experience. Olympic selection will hopefully propel her into the next phase of her career. Missing from the goalkeeper pool is Ashlyn Harris. Harris and her wife Ali Krieger, a USWNT and Orlando Pride defender, welcomed a daughter earlier this year.
In the back, Andonovski’s picks were to be expected. Abby Dahlkemper, Kelley O’Hara, Becky Sauerbrunn, Crystal Dunn, Emily Sonnett, and Tierna Davidson were all named to the 18.
In the midfield, Andonovski selected Lindsey Horan, Rose Lavelle, Samantha Mewis, Julie Ertz, and Kristie Mewis. The Mewis sisters have been dominating domestically and internationally. In 2020, Kristie Mewis made a name for herself with her club team, the Houston Dash. Kristie Mewis led her teammates to a victory in the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup, the team’s first ever Championship appearance and victory. Sam Mewis has been dominating the global game. Hailed as one of the best women’s soccer players in the world, she has recently returned to North Carolina Courage in the NWSL from Manchester City.
In the attacking third will be Heath, Carli Lloyd, Alex Morgan, Christen Press, and Megan Rapinoe. Aside from the uncertainty of Heath’s injury, the forward lineup is to be expected with familiar faces on every side of the ball. Carli Lloyd will be appearing in her 4th Olympic games at the age of 39. After earning her 300th cap and becoming the oldest woman to score a goal for the USWNT, Lloyd has set the record straight - age does not matter.
Midfielder Julie Ertz and Forward Tobin Heath are starters - no matter what teams they are on. Ertz and Heath are both dealing with injuries that have prevented them from featuring in the last few national team matches. Despite injury, the two superstars were named to the roster.
Catarina Macario, Lynn Williams, Jane Campbell, and Casey Kreuger were named alternates for this Olympic cycle.
