Rapinoe and Lloyd lead USWNT to 4th She Believes title
In the final She Believes Cup match of 2021, the USWNT defeated Argentina 6-0 to capture their 4th She Believes title.
With four goals, and 72% of possession, the USWNT dominated the first half. Megan Rapinoe found the back of the net in the 16th minute off of an assist from Carli Lloyd. The duo continued their connection in the 26th minute when Lloyd selflessly passed a ball to Rapinoe on the goal line for an easy tap in. Moments later Lloyd and Rapinoe connected once again but the shot caromed off of the post.
In the 30th minute Christen Press was denied a goal by Argentine goalkeeper Solana Pereyra with a stunning save. Press got her goal five minutes later from a combination with Lloyd. Argentina was unable to get a shot off in the first half because the Americans dictated the tempo of the match. Major Argentine threats like Yamila Rodriguez, who posed a major threat against Canada and Brazil were silenced by the USWNT. To add insult to injury, Argentina missed game-changing midfielder Lorena Benítez who tore her ACL earlier this week.
In the second half, the USWNT held their lead over Argentina and continued to bombard them with pressure. Though Argentina allowed four goals in the first half, its defenders, namely Marina Delgado did well to contain the USWNT attack and distribute the ball. Argentina began to gain some composure in the latter half of the match through communication on the defensive line. Double-teaming threats like Midge Purce helped Argentina slow the USWNT down. Pereyra showed up big with a save in the 82nd minute but she was unable to stop Alex Morgan from scoring her first goal of 2021 just two minutes later.
In the 88th minute, Press scored a header off of Lindsey Horan’s header, scoring the USWNT’s 6th and final goal of the match.
With this victory, the defending champions earn their 4th She Believes Cup title.
