Alex Ruiz's 2021 NFL Mock draft 1.0
With the 2020 NFL season over, teams will be shifting to looking at ways to improve their teams. The NFL Draft gives us great prospects every year but this class feels special. I’ll be giving my full 1st round predictions with analysis on prospects from non-playoff teams only. This Mock Draft doesn’t include any potential trades.
Pick 1
The Jacksonville Jaguars select: Trevor Lawrence (Clemson) QB
Photograph: Gerald Herbert/AP
This is a no-brainer. Lawrence has been one of the most hyped-up prospects since Andrew Luck. He has the vision, good arm, and has winning in his DNA. Lawrence had an incredible pro day showing off the accuracy and arm strength with Urban Meyer in the building as well.
Pick 2
The New York Jets select: Zach Wilson(BYU) QB
Photograph: Jaren Wilkey, BYU
The Jets would be making the right move starting over with a new quarterback. Wilson fits what QB's in today's NFL needs: Mobility and improvisation. He had a great season at BYU with over 3600+ Yards and throwing 33 touchdowns to 3 interceptions last year.
Pick 3
The Miami Dolphins select: Devonta Smith (Alabama) WR
Photograph: Getty Images
He dominated in the national championship game with 12 REC, 215 YDS, 3 TD. Smith's route running is his strong suit. He finds ways to create separation with quick cuts and spectacular change of direction. His lean body type is something that may be a problem when going up against more physical corners in the pros.
Pick 4
The Atlanta Falcons select: Justin Fields (Ohio State) QB
Photograph Joe Maiorana-USA TODAY Sports
The Falcons may look to move on from both Matt Ryan and Julio Jones this offseason. Fields has impressed during his final season with the Buckeyes leading them to a national championship appearance. Fields without a doubt has a great arm but his struggle to look at his other reads and questionable decision-making is what has made his value drop over the last couple of weeks. The Falcons are without a doubt getting a good prospect to eventually replace Matt Ryan.
Pick 5
The Cincinnati Bengals select: Penei Sewell (Oregon) OT
Photograph: Fish Duck Sports
The Bengals had one of the worst offensive lines in football last year. Joe Burrow was constantly getting pressured and he would, unfortunately, have his rookie year ended by a gruesome leg injury. Sewell opted out this past season due to Covid-19. Looking at the last season he played, he was great at stopping fast rushers from getting any leverage on him. This is an amazing skill that will come in handy when you realize the Bengals play T.J Watt twice a year.
Pick 6
The Philadelphia Eagles select: Ja'Marr Chase (LSU) WR
Photograph: Thomas Graning/AP
With Jalen Hurts taking over at Quarterback, the Eagles need to provide him with weapons to throw too. Chase has been spectacular during his college career and was key to LSU’s national championship in 2020. He has the best hands in this draft class and is great at 50/50 balls. His route running needs work as he struggles to make quick cuts and create a good amount of separation
Pick 7
The Detroit Lions select: Micah Parsons (Penn State) LB
Photograph: ESPN
Last year the Lions had the worst defense in the NFL last season. Parsons will be a huge addition to their weak Linebacker core. Like Sewell, Parsons opted out of his junior year due to Covid-19 safety concerns. In my books, he’s the best defensive prospect in this year's draft with his size and speed that isn't something many linebackers can have. The only concern with parsons is his character. His name was identified by a former player who alleges significant hazing charges, including sexual harassment, among the four players in a lawsuit against Penn State University. The same player reported in 2018 that he and Parsons got into a fight involving punching, choking, and drawing a knife back.
Pick 8
The Carolina Panthers select: Kyle Pitts (Florida) TE
Photograph: EVAN LAPEK / GETTY IMAGES
The Panthers have tons of weapons on the offensive end but they severely lack in the tight end department. Pitts has great hands for a tight end and his amazing route running can help elevate the panther’s offense that ranked 24th last season.
Pick 9
The Denver Broncos select: Patrick Surtain II (Alabama) CB
Photograph: University of Alabama Athletics
Surtain has impressed at his time in Alabama due to his playstyle. His very physical play and able to slow down receivers at the line of scrimmage without getting any flags is an incredible accomplishment. He’s excelled at locking down receivers in coverage by leaving no room. The Broncos will get a great corner to add to their secondary.
Pick 10
The Dallas Cowboys select: Gregory Rousseau (Miami) DE
Photograph: 247sports
Rousseau last season was great at pressuring the quarterback. He is lengthy and quick of the line of scrimmage. Even when being engaged with blockers, his arms were active in pressuring the QB. The Cowboys are in need of another rusher alongside Demarcus Lawrance.
Pick 11
The New York Giants select: Kwity Paye (Michigan) DE
Photograph: University of Michigan Athletics
With the Giants unlikely to resign Leonard Williams, Paye can fill that hole in the defensive line. The way he uses his hands to get off blockers is impressive and able to block shed very quickly on run plays is what I like most about him.
Pick 12
The San Francisco 49ers select: Rashawn Slater (Northwestern) OT
Photograph: Northwestern University Athletics
The 49ers will most likely not resign OT Trent Williams leaving a gap at that position. Slater has been mentioned with Penei Sewell as the best offensive tackles in this class. Slater opted out of last season like Sewell and many scouts love his fundamentals and athleticism. He’ll be a great addition to this 49ers offensive line.
Pick 13
The Los Angeles Chargers select: Christian Darrisaw (Virginia Tech) OT
Photograph: Gregory Fisher/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images
The Chargers have their Franchise Quarterback in Justin Herbert. Giving the reigning rookie of the year protection on his blind side will go a long way in helping improve his NFL career. The Chargers O-line is aging and lost Mike Pouncey due to retirement. Darrisaw has been a great pass protector for the last 3 years at Virginia Tech. He seems to be the perfect pick for the Charger’s bright future.
Pick 14
The Minnesota Vikings select: Caleb Farley (Virginia Tech) CB
Photograph: CBS Sports
Caleb Farley opted out last year to prepare for the NFL Draft. He was used to play Wide receiver before converting to a Corner. He’s got great speed and is able to keep up with receivers. Being a former receiver comes in handy when you can make good adjustments to the cuts of the receivers. His man coverage will need improvement as he has a tendency to bite on routes, luckily his quickness helps him recover. The Vikings will get another young piece in their Corner department.
Pick 15
The New England Patriots select: Trey Lance (North Dakota State) QB
Photograph: Sam Wasson/Getty Images
The Cam Newton experiment in New England did not go as planned. To get back into contention, they need a healthy young quarterback to develop. Trey Lance has many similarities to younger Cam Newton as he’s a physical runner and has a great arm to go along with it. His footwork and pocket presence are excellent. At the college level, he didn’t play much tough competition and will probably take some time to get adjusted to the pro level.
Pick 16
The Arizona Cardinals select: Jaycee Horn (South Carolina) CB
Photograph: ESPN
The Cardinals will most likely move on from veterans Patrick Peterson and Dre Kirkpatrick. Horn played in the slot corner position entering college but his transition to playing outside has gone tremendously well. Horn has the body type to be physical with receivers but needs some time to develop his corner skills off the ball. He’ll be a huge addition to the Cardinals’ defense if developed correctly.
Pick 17
The Oakland Raiders select: Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah
Photograph: The Athletic
Owusu-Koramoah is an explosive linebacker, with great speed and hit power. He runs right at the football and has great linebacker instincts. The Raider’s defense held the team back from making the playoffs. Owusu-Koramoah's ability to stop the run from getting to the 3rd level is valuable to improving the Raider’s defense.
Pick 18
The Miami Dolphins select: Alijah Vera-Tucker (USC) IOL
Photograph: SportsPac12
Tua has a familiar weapon to throw too in Devonta Smith, now he’s gonna need an Offensive line to help the running the game develop. If Miami wants to put Tua in a position to succeed they need a run game to create a balanced offense and take the pressure off the passing game. Vera-Tucker is a very athletic offensive lineman and can adapt to any scheme.
Rest of the picks are from playoff teams last season
Pick 19
The Washington Football Team select: Jaylen Waddle (Alabama) WR
Pick 20
The Chicago Bears select: Kadarius Toney (Florida) WR
Pick 21
The Indianapolis Colts select: Zaven Collins (Tulsa) DE
Pick 22
The Tennessee Titans select: Azeez Ojulari (Georgia) DE
Pick 23
The New York Jets select: Najee Harris (Alabama) RB
Pick 24
The Pittsburgh Steelers: Travis Etienne (Clemson) RB
Pick 25
The Jacksonville Jaguars select: Christian Barmore (Alabama) DL
Pick 26

Pick 27

Pick 28

Pick 29

Pick 30
The Buffalo Bills select: Nick Bolton (Missouri) OLB
Pick 31
The Kansas City Cheifs select: Jayson Oweh( Penn State) DE
