GOAT Debate settled? Why the latest Nets' transactions can make Lebron James the best of all time
After just 10 games in, the NBA has already been shaken to its core. The Lakers started the season off as if they were still in the playoffs, beating teams left and right in the funnest ways possible.
With the shock of a split second bet between Dennis Schroeder and Lebron James in the corner of the three point line, James shot a three pointer, immediately turned around towards the bench, as the ball was spinning straight into the hoop. “My teammate [Schroeder] hit me with a bet on the sideline, and I took the bet while I was still shooting the ball… you know, a bet isn’t official until you look a man in the eye”, said James in Tuesday night’s post-game presser.
It was a remarkable night for Lebron and the Lakeshow, who was just two rebounds shy of a double-double, finishing the night off with 26-5-8 in a back to back sweep against Houston on Tuesday night.

On the other side of the court, Houston was definitely not enjoying the party. After the game, James Harden wasted no time heading over to the post-game press conference and expressed his frustrations, along with a convincing demand for a trade. “I love this city. I’ve literally done everything I can. This situation is crazy [and] I don’t think it can be fixed. Thanks.” Harden said.
And that was enough to send the former MVP to Brooklyn. In a four-team blockbuster trade, the Brooklyn Nets were able to acquire Harden via swapped picks and key rotational players with the involvement of the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Indiana Pacers. The news shook the NBA world. The thought of Harden re-uniting with Kevin Durant and an absent Kyrie Irving left a lot of NBA fans confused thus Nets fans drooling at the deal, have already given the big three a name: B-Unit.
It all still doesn’t make sense. Adding another ball-dominant scorer, making it a total of three on one team, seems like a pretty tough task for new Head Coach, Steve Nash, to take on his first year with the team, let alone as a coach, period. And for Harden to leave a squad with key players like John Wall and Demarcus Cousins after nine games without giving it a try, you can bet they didn’t take it lightly.
“It’s only been nine games. Come on man, you want to jump off the cliff after nine games?”, Wall says after Harden’s press conference trade demand. The day the trade was made, Cousins took some time to give his thoughts on Harden, stating,” The disrespect started way before any interview”.

Regardless of how Wall, Cousins, or the rest of the Rockets Organization felt, Harden demanded the trade, and did it with no remorse. In the midst of all of this trade debacle, one question still remains: Can this new Nets team dethrone Lebron James and the Los Angeles Lakers? I mean, can they even get through the East against opponents like the Miami Heat or the Milwaukee Bucks? Not a clear answer as of right now, but one thing is for certain: This is the perfect opportunity for Lebron James to claim the “Greatest of all Time” title from Michael Jordan.
Four rings surely isn’t enough, especially to overshadow MJ’s six, but how about acquiring five while having to beat two super teams? Lebron has already put Cleveland on his back to defeat the Golden State Warriors, a team that showcased stars like Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, and Andre Iguodala in 2016. Needless to say, the Cavs were down three games to one in that series. Can Lebron James take on a squad of familiar foes in Kevin Durant, James Harden and traitors like Kyrie Irving?
Yes! Yes he can! Especially with the amount of support Lebron has around him in Los Angeles. If he can comeback against the Warriors with guys like Tristan Thompson and Kyrie Irving, there is no doubt in my mind that he can lead the Lakers, who have Anthony Davis, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Montrezl Harrel, and not to mention a fantastic rotation that involves players like NBA Champs Marc Gasol, Alex Caruso and Kyle Kuzma, past the Brooklyn Nets.

But would that still be enough? Like Lebron, Michael Jordan faced similar circumstances and came out triumphant. Overcoming the 1990-91 Lakers, while fighting off the Detroit “Bad Boys” to get to the NBA Finals, and a back-to-back championship run over Stockton and Malone’s Utah Jazz to seal the second three-peat.
Despite the history between the two players and different eras, each player had to play in order to fight for the “GOAT” title. One thing is for sure as we continue to seek a settlement for this debate: This NBA season, with no fans present, is going to be a hell-of-a ride.
